In a recent series of blog posts entitled "Mladic in Srebrenica," I examined the reported movements of the former Bosnian Serb military commander during the days immediately following the fall of the United Nations "safe area" in July 1995. Today, I will address the larger question of Mladic's responsibility for the murders of around 8,000 Muslim men and boys dumped in mass graves, as shown on the map above.

Mladic's defense lawyers have said they are planning to mount a two-tier defense. First, they will argue that the number of Bosnian Muslim victims has been wildly exaggerated. While they concede that there may have been some scattered "revenge killings" following the capture of the enclave, they claim that the overwhelming majority of the deaths were due to combat, or even Muslims fighting among themselves. Former Bosnian Serb president Radovan Karadzic has employed a similar defense in his own trial, which recently moved into the Srebrenica phase.

The second pillar of the Mladic defense will be the claim that he left the Srebrenica area by the time the mass executions began, and was not himself present at any of the execution sites. His attorneys will argue that he did not order the executions and cannot be held responsible for isolated acts of revenge by forces under his overall command.

Let us concede from the start that there is no "smoking gun" against Mladic, in the form of a written order or diary entry proving that he ordered the murders of 8,000 Muslims. Furthermore, claims by survivors of the massacres that Mladic personally supervised the executions have yet to be independently corroborated. As I indicated in a recent blog post, I have seen no evidence (other than disputed survivor testimony) showing that Mladic was in the Srebrenica\Zvornik area on July 14, prior to meeting international envoys in Belgrade. If anybody knows of such evidence, please let me know, and I will be happy to update the post.

While Mladic's whereabouts on July 14-at the time of the Orahovac executions-remain in doubt, he appears to have solid alibis for July 15-17, during which period thousands of Muslim prisoners were killed in the Zvornik area, north of Srebrenica. The fact that he was not on the spot does not of course mean that he was not giving orders from afar, through his established chain of command.

Even if we give Mladic the benefit of the doubt about his physical presence at the mass execution sites, there remains a mountain of evidence suggesting that he was the primary initiator and organizer of Europe's worst atrocity since World War II. To summarize the most important points:

Mladic's public statements. From the moment he first set foot in Srebrenica, on the afternoon of July 11, Mladic made clear that he was out for "revenge against the Turks," his derogatory term for Bosnian Muslims. He orchestrated an atmosphere of extreme intimidation around his meetings with Dutchbat commanders and Muslim representatives on July 11 and 12, telling the Muslims that they had a choice whether "to survive or disappear." He ordered an information blackout on July 13, closing roads to all non-authorized traffic and barring journalists from entering the area.

Supervision of the transportation operation. After initially asking the United Nations to provide transportation for Muslim refugees out of Srebrenica area, Mladic personally supervised the procurement of buses and fuel. He was present at Potocari when his troops separated men and boys of fighting age from the women and children, and refused to allow United Nations military observers to inspect the nearby "White House," where the men were being held. He visited some of the detention sites for Muslim refugees, including Sandici meadow (toward the bottom of the map), on July 12 and 13.

His presence in the Srebrenica area between July 11-13. While Mladic's movements on July 14 are still unclear, there is plenty of eyewitness testimony and other evidence to show that he remained in the Srebrenica area for three days, from July 11 to 13, and spoke with large groups of prisoners who were later executed. During this period, there were well-documented cases of "opportunistic killings" of Muslim captives by Bosnian Serb forces, as well as a massacre of around 1,000 Muslim men in the Kravica warehouse.

His control over Bosnian Serb forces.  Videos taken of the capture of Srebenica demonstrate Mladic's penchant for micro-management. He concerned himself with the smallest details of military operations, and made it his business to know exactly what was going on. He was both feared and revered by his soldiers, who knew that they faced harsh punishment if they disobeyed his orders. The Srebrenica killings involved thousands of people in a vast logistic operation that included the requisition of fleets of buses, organization of execution squads, and the use of heavy earth-moving equipment for mass graves in a dozens different locations.

The actions of his immediate subordinates. Several Bosnian Serb officers, including General Radislav Krstic, commander of the Drina Corps, have testified that the executions were organized by a tightly-knit group of Mladic aides. A key role appears to have been played by Colonel Ljubisha Beara, a trusted Mladic associate, who was found guilty of genocide, extermination and murder in June 2010 and sentenced to life imprisonment. Judges found that Beara was the "driving force behind the murder enterprise" and was visited many of the detention and execution sites. Given their close ties and commander-subordinate relationship, it seems inconceivable that Beara could have mounted such a vast operation without receiving orders from Mladic.

The cover-up. Mladic's own diary shows that he was personally confronted with demands by international envoys to explain what had happened to the missing Srebrenica men on the evening of July 14. Instead of halting the executions, he allowed them to continue. After the United States published reconnaissance photos of the grave sites in August, Mladic mobilized heavy earth-moving equipment and trucks to scatter the remains of the victims in secondary graves across eastern Bosnia.

That leaves the "there weren't that many murders" defense.  As I have mentioned in previous posts, Srebrenica is probably the most meticulously documented war crime in history. DNA matches have been found for 5,600 of the 8,000 or so victims. In order to seriously challenge this estimate, it is necessary to cast doubt on the impartiality and expertise of hundreds of international crime scene investigators, forensic scientists, demographers, and contemporaneous witnesses, including Bosnian Serb officials. While it is possible that several hundred of the Muslims who fled Srebrenica following its capture by Mladic's forces, were "killed in combat," the vast majority were murdered at specific execution sites far removed from the scene of the fighting.

Please click on the following links for a detailed explanation of Mladic's actions and movements on July 11, July 12, July 13, and July 14.

Next week I will look at the role played by the international community in the fall of Srebrenica and the ability of western intelligence, particularly U.S. intelligence , to track the massacres in real time.

The Case Against Ratko Mladic

Careful Michael Dobbs, your bias and partisan reporting is showing, or is that your Serbophobia at work?

Cleverly, Dobbs makes no mention that for several months leading up to Serbs taking Srebrenica, Nasir Oric and his band of goons and thugs destroyed 34 of the Serbian villages that surrounded Srebrenica killing 3,200 innocent Serbian women, children and old men, none of who were combatants. Orich returned each night after their war crimes to the safety of the "safe-Haven" for the protection by NATO forces. Apparently Dobbs definition of "Genocide" is to only recognize the victims of the side that you support. Dobbs again inflates the alleged deaths to 8,000 when that number was reduced to 7,000 3 weeks after it supposedly happened. Only 1,200 body parts have been identified as these alleged victims and here we are 15 years later and Dobbs like the stupid Kangaroo court at The Hague are incapable of accounting for 8,000 bodies.

Dobbs also ignores the report by John Pomfret of the Washington Post who reported two weeks after the fall of Srebrenica of seeing "4,000 Muslim troops who made their way through the forest to safety in Tuzla." Those survivors are never counted by people of Dobbs' ilk.

But please do not take my word, seek out the video that Bill Schiller of the Toronto Star was forced to watch in the living room of Nasir Oric in which he video recorded the blowing up of Serb houses and if someone survived the blast he would capture and decapitate them. Bill Schiller called the video, "Nasir Oric's Greatest Hits." Yet even with that footage the Kangaroo court in The Hague set him free.

Inscribed over the doorway of the U.S. Supreme Court are the words..."Equal Justice Under the Law," a concept that Dobbs defecates on in reaching for yet another byline.

There is nothing equal about Michael Dobbs, he is a whore that seeks out sensational headlines much like Roy Gutman who won half a Pulitzer for his fictitious story about the Omarska camp. In his book Witness to Genocide, surely an oxymoron for a title, Gutman wrote: "Having set such lofty standards, I immediately made an exception and wrote about the Omarska camp which I had not visited, based on the secondhand witness account." Lofty my ass, both Gutman and Dobbs are fabricators of the facts to pump up their reports. Or worse, omission journalists when the facts do not support their story.

Mladic was the first General in modern warfare in the midst of war to bring in buses to evacuate women and children out of Srebrenica, that was hardly an act of genocide. Dobbs also cleverly ignores the recent documentary that reveals that Alija Izetbegovic and Bill Clinton conspired to create a major atrocity in order to get American involvement. Witnesses in the film claim that "5,000 victims" was the desired death count.

We now know that the Muslims killed their own people at the Markale Market and we also now know that the 45 Albanian Muslims killed at Racak was a stage managed massacre orchestrated by Ambassador William Walker who said: "He only cried twice in his life, when his mother died and when he saw the victims at Racak." That was a media driven lie. Why did he not cry as Ambassador to El Salvador when thousands of Salvadorians were decapitated, and their head placed on pikes that dotted the countryside? Because those Salvadorian goons and thugs were trained on American military bases.

We now know through several forensic experts that the 45 victims at Racak "were killed in battle the previous day, that their bodies were moved to the near bloodless crime scene and that their military uniforms were exchanged for street clothing. Those experts also said that the bodies were mutilated after their deaths."

Therefore Mr. Dobbs, I place you in the theatrical business of stage managing the news in much the same way as the Bosnian Muslims created their massacres of their own people in order to blame the Serbs.

Shame on you. Your hate for

Shame on you. Your hate for Bosniaks will make you write any lies to hide the truth.

Firstly what 3200 serbs do you talk about? The Republika Srpska's Commission for War Crimes(so a serb source) gave the number of Serb victims in the municipalities of Bratunac, Srebrenica and Skelani as 995; 520 in Bratunac and 475 in Srebrenica including military personal. For the Honourable Cross and Golden Freedom, a book published by the RS Ministry of Interior, referred to 641 Serb victims in the Bratunac-Srebrenica-Skelani region.
If this figure is true that you claim why is it not verified by an international organisation such as ICMP.

The number of Bosniak and small number Croat civilians who were starved in the Srebrenica enclave during the 3 year siege is much larger than 3000. Not to mention the 3000 victims at Bratuanc soccer field that were butchered in early 1992 before the Bosnian's fired even one bullet in self defense. Many of these victims were women and children. Your hero Mladic said he would let the women go to make them suffer forever. However, had the Un not been present they would have most likely awaited the same fate as the non-serbian citezens of Bratunac.

Srrebrenica massacre is not something you can argue happened or did not. It is a fact. I say this as someone who has lost a father, 2 grandfatehrs over 70, many extended family including my grand grand mother who was over 90 and killed in Bratunac by hateful nationalist serb thugs.

Stop spewing prropaganda and revisonism. According to the international Comission for Missing Persons: " analyzing DNA profiles extracted from bone samples of exhumed mortal remains and matching them to the DNA profiles obtained from blood samples donated by relatives of the missing, the International Commission on Missing Persons (ICMP) has so far revealed the identity of 6,598 persons missing from the July 1995 fall of Srebrenica." Another 1500 victims are unaccounted for or partially found in secondary graves after the serb nationalist chetniks realised that the world would realise their crimes. Heck, there is first hand accounts of Serbian military man testifying that they participated at one or two of the 5-6 key sites and summarily gunned down civilian Bosniak men.

Yes Bosniak muslims killed their own people and Serbs didn't sniper hundreds of innocent citezens of Sarajevo including babies for 3 years and constantly prevent humanitarian aid to starving people? ohh the poor innocent serbs hated for no reason by everyone who is sane. Sickening you will use any excuse to justifty the most disgusting acts.

"Thousands of men executed and buried in mass graves, hundreds of men buried alive, men and women mutilated and slaughtered, children killed before their mothers' eyes, a grandfather forced to eat the liver of his own grandson. These are truly scenes from hell, written on the darkest pages of human history.” - Firstly, in the first few years after the war you were celebrating these crimes now that the world is realising the truth of your sickening and hateful mentality indoctrinated into you from childhood you try to make it look like these never occured. The evidence is there for the whole world to see and the truth is slowly comming out. What is sad is your peoples inability to accept reality, trying to twist the truth as you see fit.

You can not hate Bosnia , as much as Bosnians can love it.

"Bosnian Genocide (1992) - Remains of a baby bottle and baby clothing with a bullet hole were excavated from the mass grave Suha in the Srebrenica region, near Bratunac. The massacre was committed by Serbs around Srebrenica in 1992, more than 3 years before the Srebrenica genocide. The mass grave Suha contained bodies of 30 Bosniak women and 8 children with the youngest child being 2 years old. The events preceding and leading to the Srebrenica genocide included unprecedented levels of cruelty committed by Bosnian Serbs around Srebrenica against the civilian Bosnian Muslim population of the Podrinje"

Racak Taqqiya etc.

AT a press confedrence in Jan 1999 Pres. Slick Willy Clinton responded to Scott Pelley (CBS "reporter) shilling from the audience. WJC made with the usual crocodile tears. (And he pronounced the place name "raw cock".) "Racak" was another hoax supervised by William Walker, who specializes in the art. Cf. his involvement if Catholic priest and their housekeeper in Central America. In the first photos of the dead at Racak their white Albanian Muslim skull caps were off. These had been put back on the heads when the corpses were re-arranged for the next photo op. Clinton had also brought to the White House the "Anne Frank of Sarajevo", Zlata Filipovic. Bill's coaches had no success in teaching him the pronunciation there, either. He called her "Falapovich". Linda Frum's review of "Zlata's Diary" in Toronto exposed the fraud. In September 2004 who should appear on TV in Dublin? Zlata Filipovic, with a brand new Master's degree in that ancient Celtic subject "Peace Studies". (Funder George O'Soros?)
If she ever lets out the truth, her BMW will be run into by a tree. Hallmark anti-Serb propaganda is a string of false flag atrocities - the 1994 and 1995 "Market Massacres", the 1992 Sarajevo Bread Queue. By sheer coincidence TV Sarajevo cameras were always switched on just ahead of show time. At the Bread Q on tripods, at Markale the camer was shoulder-borne (Mark Danner). Those capers, with "Bosnian" TV pics were on US TV the same evening, but Dobb's photo-recon "analysts" took weeks to "analyze" (read concoct) the script Dobbs recites.

Dobbs and his manipulation of the facts

Let us be clear here. The DNA that everyone likes to use to place blame on these alleged 7,000 Muslim victims is a hoax, Serbs are not allowed to used any of this DNA in the court at the Hague Kangaroo court. Why? Because the Muslim families have been given the right to approve the release of any that DNA evidence about their alleged family victims. How outrageous, you would think that they would want to convict the Serbs of the crimes they accuse them of perpetrating?

If these Muslims will not agree to the proper use of DNA, then why in hell are we all pretending that they are victims? If the DNA is prevented from being properly used in court then this is all a charade in which we use any means possible to blame the Serbs for fictitious deaths because it is far easier to build a case for 7,000 Srebrenica victims in which the evidence is withheld then it is to know the truth built on solid evidence.

We now know that President Alija Izetbegovic of Bosnia paid Bill Clinton one million dollars to come to Srebrenica on the first year anniversary of the the alleged deaths at Srebrenica. Clinton came and placed flowers on the tombstone that was inscribed in the Arabic language? A language that 98% of the Bosnian Muslims cannot read. Why, if Genocide was indeed committed, would any country agree to put a tombstone on the site of this alleged Genocidal crime that the families cannot read? The term is called propaganda! And Michael Dobbs is an expert at propaganda. A pox on his house for not dealing in honest journalism.

This article is a puff piece to boast the Muslim campaign in Washington DC where the Bosnian Muslims paid over $70 million dollars to Ruder/Finn Public Relations, the largest public relations firm in the world to promote Bosnian independent, the first Muslim state in Europe... and millions more are being spent by Muslim lobby groups that have bought off our politicians.

We know for instance that Senator Robert Dole was paid one million dollars by Albanians in New York when he ran for the presidency. We also know that his wife, Elizabeth Dole, as head of the American Red Cross refused to give blood, or any humanitarian aid to the Serbs during the war as she felt the Serbs were at fault, changing the humanitarian effort of the Red Cross for decades to come. We know that Senator John McCain was paid millions of dollars in his presidential campaign by Albanian Muslims and that his wife went to Kosovo for publicity. There is no honor in duplicity!

Americans are being spoon fed propaganda to serve the industrial military complex that President Eisenhower warned us against. The US captured Kosovo territory from Serbian farmers and built the single largest American military base in the world built since Vietnam, it is called Camp Bondsteel in Kosovo. Hello is anyone paying attention here or are we all pretending that this is just Democracy at work as the United State violates the sovereign territory of Serbia in violation of the UN Charter, the Helsinki Final Act, the Geneva Conventions, the NATO Treaty and a number of international laws?

Just for the record Mr. Dobbs

Reported by Russell Gordon, Chronicles Magazine, August, 1999.

Arrogantly strutting around the opulent OSCE restaurant, on an upper floor of its Pristina headquarters, Richard Holbrooke cut an imposing figure. The “Balkan peace negotiator” whose bloody legacy stretched from Vietnam and Indonesia to Belgrade minced no words about US policy for the region. In front of the five heads of UNMIK he bellowed: “Forget multi-ethnic Kosovo. Forget Resolution 1244. We only signed that to get rid of the Serbs.” It was a warm August 1999, and the official representatives of the “international community” remained coolly silent. Only one official, Dennis MacNamara, head of UNHCR spoke up, questioning why the UN took on the mission if the expulsion of the Serbs was a foregone conclusion. Holbrooke brushed off his inquiry; the other “dignitaries” remained quiet.

General Mladic

Dobbs's piece should be titled "The Case against Michael Dobbs".
Re General Mladic's speech of 11 July 1995.
Mr Dobbs posed for a photo next to the stele at Potocari, did he notice lines 8 and 9? "Pravda je Osveta"- Justice is revenge.” Sauce is supposed to be gender-neutral for goose & gander.
From a source he does not and probably cannot name, Mr Dobbs assures readers that Serbs’ use of the term "Turk" is disparaging.
In the Balkans it has long been usual on both sides, Christian and Muslim, to call the Bosnian Muslims “Turks”. The Italians did, the Austrians did. The Muslims themselves did and still do. Even in India Muslims are called Turks. In Bosnia when a “Turk” speaks of “Serbs” the reference is to Eastern Orthodoxy, religion, not nation. An Islamic census registers people under religion, not nation.
On the occasion of Prime Minister Erdogan's visit to Bosnia in 2008, Bosnian Muslim leader Mustafa Ceri? proclaimed “Turkey is our mother land”. In November 2011 Ceri? called on Bosnia’s Muslims to call themselves once again “Turks”.

Liar

Yes, I am calling you a liar. You know why? Beacause of your false claims about the term "Turks". First a little background: The term "Turks" has two meaning, both of them ancient. "Turci" was sort of an ethnic term for Bosnian muslims during the Ottoman era, while "Turkushi" was the term used for the Ottoman Turks. You are either a liar, or you lack knowledge. I would hope that the last is true, i.e. that you just lack knowledge, because then you can actually learn something and not spread falsehoods about the Bosnian muslims, Bosniaks.

By the way, you should put forward some evidence for your claims that the Austrians and Italians called the Bosnians Turks. The thing is that Austria-Hungary began establishing Bosnia in the 19th century as a territory separate from Croatia and Serbia, because it was, it was specific. They created the Bosnian "Earth" museum (Zemaljski Muzej BiH), a sort of a historic museum of Bosnia and Herzegovina that holds important ancient, historical, cultural heritage of Bosnia. So even if they used the term "Turks" for Bosnian muslims, the meaning was not connected to the Ottoman Empire. That is irrelevant anyhow.

Now for the most important bit of uncovering your blatant lie for what it is, or your lack of knowledge for what it is:
The Bosnian muslims, Bosniaks, never called themselves Turks. When I say never, I mean in the modern age. Since WWII we are all Yugoslavs, and since the new census laws of the 1970's, a new nation-term for Bosnian muslims was accepted; it was simply "Muslims" (obviously, the national term Bosnians could not be implemented in this nation-state thinking, as Bosnia and Herzegovina was much more diversive and multi-cultural than Serbia and Croatia respectively).

The Bosnian muslim leader Mustafa Ceric might have said that "Turkey is our motherland", but I need to point out to you that his views do not represent the views of the majority of the Bosnian muslims. He is not a democratically elected leader and does not enjoy the status among Bosniaks as the Pope does among true Catholics. Far from it. Most consider him a power hungry freak of our local political and religious nature.

When BOSNIAKS speak about Serbs, they reference the ehtnic group of Orthodox Christians, that is correct. The thing is that the nation-state building has surpassed our part of the world, and people are stuck in this ancient thinking pattern. National identity is built solid with the one thing that separates the people the most, that is the biggest difference between the people of former Yugoslavia, especially Bosnia and Herzegovina: religion. Religion is the big divide, so in order for the political elites to remain in power (through the popular strategy of "divide et impera"), they play on peoples lowest, almost primal emotions of identity; they separate their own "herd" from "the others" by strongly connecting their national identity to religion. That is basically the only difference between the people of Bosnia and Herzegovina, not counting the regional differences in which e.g. Bosniaks and Croats, or Bosniaks and Serbs, in one regional area are much more similar to eachother than Bosniaks, Croats or Serbs of that region are similar to Bosniaks, Croats or Serbs respectively in other Bosnian regions. All ethnic groups living in Bosnia and Herzegovina are actually Bosnians. Most Bosnians are, as I said, quite specific. Croats of Croatia don't really see Bosnian Croats as anything else but Bosnians (except for nationalists, of course, who claim big parts of Bosnia are actually Croatian soil, but that is a whole different story). However, there is no national definition of "Bosnians", probably because people are afraid that it means that their specific ethnic identity would be lost within such a definition. So let's leave ethnic, religious and national definitions aside when talking about this.

The most important thing is that Bosniaks in general consider the term "Turks" to be a derogatory term for them. There is no question abouti it. It is a term closely connected to the term "Balija"; both terms ("Turks" and "Balija") are used and have been used by Serbian and Croatian nationalists in dehumanizing the Bosniaks. You can compare some African Americans' use of the word "nigga" for one another; however, they would never use the term "nigger", as it has the meaning it has. The term "Turks" for Bosniaks has the same meaning as the term "nigger" has for African Americans.

That is the blatant lie of yours that I wanted to uncover. Bosniaks, no matter if they are nationalists or not, no matter if they are religious or perhaps atheists, who even refuse all ethnic based definitions of identity, they all have one thing in common: They don't consider themselves Turks, and they don't call themselves Turks, as the term is derogatory to them (there are a few exceptions, of course, but those only confirm the rule). Also, Mustafa Ceric does not represent all of the Bosniak population, in fact, far from it.

So, when Ratko Mladic upon entering Srebrenica in 1995 in front of a camera said "Welcome to Serbian Srebrenica ... Time has come for us to take revenge on the Turks in these parts for the uprising against Dahija" ("Došlo je vreme da se nakon bune protiv dahija Turcima osvetimo i na ovim prostorima"), he did not call for revenge for Kravica in 1993, but he took a much more and deeper historical context, as the uprising against Dahija happened in the 19th century. And his term "Turks" was nothing other than simple dehumanization of the Bosnian muslims; dehumanization, as we know, makes it easier to kill people. That is why hateful Bosniaks use the term "chetniks" for Serbs and "ustasha" for Croats.

I hope you don't take this criticism the wrong way, but I needed to point out to you that, once again, the term "Turks" is a derogatory terms for Bosniaks.

(I wrote "muslims" throughout this comment as to separate the religious term from the Yugoslav nation-term of "Muslims.)

I forgot to mention one thing

One thing that I forgot to mention is the article in Oslobodjenje that you are reffering to.

Mustafa Ceric is a populist. That is why he proclaimed in 2008 that "Turkey is our mother land", which, as I stated, most Bosniks would disagree upon.

Also, you claim that Ceric called in NOVEMBER 2011 on Bosniaks to call themselves "Turks". That is simply not true. He did that in 2006, during an opening of a mosque in the town of Rogatica. As I said, Ceric is a populist, and he acts as a populist most often during such events as mosque-openings. It fits his political agenda to make the Bosniaks more homogenous and more connected to, dependent on his religious institution (I say "his religious institution because it has become just that during his mandates).

Please, stop forging your arguments and twisting and bending facts. 2006 is NOT 2011, and Ceric is NOT as beloved by all Bosniaks as the Pope is by his deepest Catholic followers. And the peoples of Bosnia and Hercegovina and former Yugoslavia are NOT homogenous, not even the Serbs, if I need to point that out. Not all Serbs consider Mladic a hero, and not all Serbs believe the propaganda that they have been fed to since the days of Milosevic, that the Serbian people only defended themselves in the wars in former Yugoslavia, by seizing other republics' territories and terrorizing, killing and expelling the non-Serb population from those areas. Of course, no crime justifies another, and I would not in my right mind justify or rationalize crimes against any human being(s) by trying to explain that it happened as an act of revenge, or whatever. We must not legitimize war crimes by claiming "it was an act of revenge", or "those were chaotic times", or "that was an act of a small, fanatical minority", or "war crimes happened on all sides". And we must not take away the Serbian leadership their deserved responsibility for the most heinous crimes against humanity in Europe since WWII. Condemning Karadzic and Mladic is not equal to condemning all Serbs and calling all Serbs genocidal maniacs.

My Serb hero is Srdjan Aleksic and the likes of him. I would suggest to everyone that if they are going to pick idols, they should do their research.

"You're a liar" said the dumb man.

An old wheeze is " 'You're a liar' said the dumb man." This is how deaf mutes, pre Political Correctness, were called -- and without bias. "I see," said the blind man." Our Truth-cop here is innocent of phonetic reality. "Black Americans," (s)he says, "would never use the word 'nigger'..." Balderdash. In southern US speech, Black or White, in NY and in Boston the word written "nigger" is pronounced without the R sound. New Yawkah Woody Allen e.g. punned on Poona (city in India) and "Poonee", in a lawyer-joke, where "Poona" is to be taken as if "Pooner" -- one who "poons" and "poonee" as one who is "pooned:" Ever hear the old song "nothin' could be FINER than to be in CAROLINA..."? Buy a hearing aid. You recite. You received your indoctrination at the knees of ignoramuses. Now, as for Austrians & Italians, how many of the "Turks" defeated in 1683 at Vienna by Polish King Jan Sobieski were from Anatolia? How many of the Turkish soldiers were Serbs, Greeks, Bulgars etc.? The territory called Vojvodina was once "die Schwaebische Tuerkei -- Swabian [= German] Turkey"... English atlases of 1900 still called Bosnia "Turkey in Europe." -- Rossini's "Turco in Italia" was an Ottoman subject, not an Anatolian, probably an Algerian, like the Turks who raided County Cork in Ireland in 1632 to kidnap a boatload of English settlers for work and slaves. If you read Italian, see http://www.ilpalio.org/schiavo.htm. It's a site for Siena history; the story is about a "Schiavo, gia' Turco" -- a slave, formerly Turk", named Rebanich who was enslaved in Wallachia, then liberated by Italian forces of the Holy Roman [NB] Emperor Charles VI (who was German). The slave called Rebanich was obviously a Slav who had been forcibly converted to Islam.-- The Austrian family "Wosner", i.e. "Bosnian", were Christians, Serbs. To the Austrians, Prince Eugene. e.g. Muslims were "Turks". You, deah Readah, don't considah yourself a Turk. You are modern. But you are uttahly innocent of history. Your teachahs are ignoramuses. Mustafa Ceric may not represent all of the Bosniak population, But he calls himself a Turk and wants you to do the same. P.S. "Bosniak" in Sarajevo 1914 was used for all Sarajlije, Muslim or Christian. Potiorek, after the first attempt to kill Franz Ferdinand assured the Archduke there would be no second attempt:"I know my Bosniaks"...

"Turks" and "Bosniaks"

The following is slightly edited from a Croatian site: "… Croats in Bosnia are also Bosniaks. Indeed, many of them bear Bosniak as their second name. The meaning of Bosniak is simply - a Bosnian. In the Zagreb telephone book (1994/95) are 210 subscribers surnamed Bosnjak, with only one Muslim forename, and also more than 30 Bosnjakovic's, with only 3 Muslim forenames. There is village Bosnjaci in Croatia (4,500 inhabitants prior to 1991, near Zupanja). I did not find any village of a similar name on a map of Bosnia. Also in Hrvatsko Zagorje, near Zagreb, there is a small village of Bosna, then Bosanci near Bosiljevo and Bjelovar, Bosnici near Dreznica and Kijevo, Bosanka (that is, Bosnian Woman!) near the famous city of Dubrovnik, and two small regions of Bosna near Vrbovac and D. Stupnik. There is also a village of Mala Bosna (that is, Small Bosnia) near the city of Subotica. One can find Croatian families bearing the Turkish second name of Ulama even in the NW of Croatia (Hrvatsko Zagorje). The town of Tuhelj in Hrvatsko Zagorje was given by those Croats who had to escape from the region of the village of Tuhelj in Bosnia, between Kresevo and Konjic, see [Gizdelin, pp 44, 53]. Near Varazdin Breg there is a village of Turcin (= The Turk). Croatian glagolitic priest fra Matija Bosnjak had to escape from Bosnia in front of the Turks with numerous compatriots. He died in the town of Rab, where on his grave the year of his death, 1525, was chiselled in Croatian Glagolitic characters.
The name of "Muslimani" could have been Musliman without being religious at all, as was the case for example with Raif Dizdarevic, former president of former Yugoslavia; of course, his predecessors were Muslims). On the other hand the term "musliman" (with small m) had the meaning of Muslim exclusively in the religious sense. The old geographical name Bosniak traditionally denoted any citizen of Bosnia - either Croat (as we said, many of them have Bosniak as a surname), or Muslim, or Serb. It is strange that this usurpation of the name of Bosniak has been accepted even in the official Croatia. From this follows a complete usurpation of the Bosnian name (usurpation of Bosnian literature, language and of the entire history of Bosnia). Of course, we do not deny the right of Muslim - Bosniaks to call themselves Bosniaks. We would like to indicate that the name of Bosniaks does not refer exclusively to Bosnian Muslims, but to Bosnian Croats too."
In Byzantine records, the first record of "Tourkoi" -- Turks -- is to vassals of Turkic overlords. They were Magyars, Hungarians... See Cambridge Mediaeval History.

Srebrenica

Like so much of the ho hum, immature, one-sided, and desperate propaganda emanating from mainstream corporate-controlled media and other Western "think" tanks/NGOs, this piece is so obviously anti-Serb that little response it required. Notice that there is absolutely no mention of the hundreds if not thousands of Bosnian Serb civilians who were slaughtered by Muslim fanatics/war criminals such as Nasir Oric from the so-called "safe haven" of Srebrenica and which brought on the revenge retaliation against Bosnian Muslim men. Though these revenge attacks that overtook Srebrenica cannot not be condoned (wars are never a walk in the park - atrocities happened on all sides), the UN did nothing to stop the vicious and barbaric slaughter of Bosnian Serb civilians who resided in the hamlets surrounding Srebrenica from Muslim Jihaddists/terrorists who were operating from Srebrenica and elsewhere. On top of that, if Mladic was so allegedly "genocidal," why did he let all women and children go instead of mercilessly slaughter all of them? As has been consistently evident in the entire Yugoslav civil wars, the West has shown little interest in investigating, exposing, and prosecuting war crimes committed against Serbian civilians as it is desperate to use the Srebrenica battle as an excuse to further destroy and colonize the former Yugoslavia at Serbian expense. Thus, this region will remain embroiled in frustrated and unresolved tensions/issues which may erupt into WWIII very soon especially as the Western imperialism wanes. Michael Dobbs is merely a pseudo-intellectual NGO/ "hired hand" who has been paid to desperately and shamelessly justify the illegal actions of the West in Yugoslavia by one-sidedly focusing on Ratko Mladic (the Western-appointed "Hitler" of the Balkans) and ignoring any and all crimes committed against Serbian civilians.
Sincerely,
Michael Pravica, Ph.D

There he goes again!

As usual, in his persecutory zeal Michael Dobbs artfully obfuscates some key issues. There is no serious dispute that at least several hundred Bosnian Muslim prisoners of war were executed. Philip Corwin, UN Civil Affairs Coordinator in Bosnia in 1995 says that the number is about 700 and that the “difference between the 700 and the commonly referred to 8,000 is not numerical -- it is political” [interview in “Junge Welt,” Berlin, July 31, 2008].

The executions were performed mostly by 10th Sabotage Detachment personnel. That unit’s most famous member, Dražen Erdemovi?’s testimony during various Srebrenica trials is replete with falsehoods and contradictions, which were ably debunked by Bulgarian-German analyst Germinal Civikov in his „Star Witness“, http://www.srebrenica-project.com/DOWNLOAD/books/Star_witness.pdf .

But the actual number of executed prisoners and the circumstances and motivation of that crime are issues entirely independent of Mladic’s itinerary, which in order to impress the simpleminded Dobbs is reconstructing using some fanciful sources.

The only way Dobbs can harness the alleged „5,600 DNA matches“ in the service of his claims is by diminishing the number of Muslims who were killed in the fighting which went on at approximately the same time as the executions. Predictably he says the „it is possible that several hundred of the Muslims who fled Srebrenica“ were „killed in combat“ [his quotation marks, and he might explain their purpose] while „the vast majority were murdered at specific execution sites far removed from the scene of the fighting“.

In fact, it was the exact reverse.

(1) In the Popovic et al. trial, prosecution military expert Richard Butler testified that in his professional opinion there were “up to 2,000 combat casualties” on Bosnian Muslim side.

(2) In his July 17, 1995, UNPROFOR Sector NE, Tuzla, report, Edward Joseph estimates that “up to three thousand were killed on the way, mostly by mines and Bosnian Serb Army engagements. Unknown others were captured. Some committed suicide. Unknown others went to Žepa.”

(3) In the UNMO Situation report of July 17, 1995, it is estimated that the casualties suffered by the retreating Bosnian Muslim 28th Division column were “up to 3,000 believed to have been killed by minefields, snipers and ambush conflict with the Bosnian Serb Army…the SLDRS reported that they burned some Serbian villages during the escape. Their stated reason was to widen the escape corridor.”

(4) Bosnian Muslim army chief of staff, General Enver Hadžihasanovi?, stated in his testimony at the Krsti? trial that 2,628 officers and men of the 28th Division were killed in combat during the breakout from Srebrenica [Prosecutor v. Krstic, Transcript, April 6 2001, p. 9532]

(5) In his memoir, „Peace Journey: The struggle for peace in Bosnia“ [London, 1998], EU peace negotiator and post-Dayton High Representative in Bosnia, says that “probably in excess of 4,000 men perished in brutal ambushes and mountain combat” while the column was trying to reach safety, p. 66.

(6) John Schindler, US intelligence officer in Bosnia at the time these events were taking place, currently national security professor at the UN Naval College, estimated that “there were about 5,000 casualties” in the Srebrenica column, while “about 2,000” prisoners were executed [Interview in the documentary “Srebrenica: A Town Betrayed”, http://tv.globalresearch.ca/2011/07/srebrenica-town-betrayed , at 51:14 to 52:12 minutes].

These data, coming from a variety of contemporaneous as well as post-factum analytical sources, counterdict Dobbs’ simplistic misrepresentations about the complex and still largely unexplained events around Srebrenica in July of 1995. Dobbs’ stories can impress only those who are unfamiliar with source materials and have but a rudimentary media-generated understanding of the underlying issues. Having tried his hand at journalism, perhaps Dobbs should now explore new challenges and offer to write the screenplay for Angelina Jolie’s next cinematographic flop, since she seems to be as uninformed about Srebrenica as he is.

Dobbs's historiography on Gavrilo Princip

Gavrilo Princip started The Great War? Not even Hitler claimed that, but was doubly delighted that "mongrel" Austria-Hungary had taken a hit and not at the hand of German students, as he had feared. Michael Dobbs virtually plagiarizes the revisionism of CNN, ABC, BBC and other press lapdogs. Om 19 June 1914 the headline on the New York Times read “HEIR TO AUSTRIA’S THRONE IS SLAIN WITH HIS WIFE BY A BOSNIAN YOUTH TO AVENGE SEIZURE OF HIS COUNTRY”. Barbara Tuchman [1912-1982] wrote: “At the end of June, news that Serbian patriots had assassinated the Archduke Franz Ferdinand, heir to the Austrian throne, in an obscure town in the annexed territory of Bosnia, provided a sensation of the kind to which Europe was accustomed. It passed without causing undue public alarm. Then suddenly, a month later, on July 24, with terrible impact, came the announcement that Austria had delivered an ultimatum to Serbia of such ‘brutality’ in the words of Vorwärts, the German Socialist paper, that ‘it can be interpreted only as a deliberate attempt to provoke war.’ Full scale crisis opened beneath Europe’s feet.” –The Guns of August. 1962, page 6.

What meets the eye!

Americans are really naive, they know little of their own history and even less of European history.

Michael Dobbs claims the start of WWI was caused by the assassination of Austrian Archduke Ferdinand in Sarajevo, yet Dobbs manages to ignore the fact that the Serbian King, his wife and the French Ambassador were assassinated in France 3 years earlier. Are we Serbs to pretend that killing our king had no political or world impact, but killing a stupid Archduke did? Dobbs uses historical facts like chess pieces that he moves around the board to suit his own game. We know know that a Croat and a Montenegrin were part of the plot to assassinate the Archduke, but that fact is never mentioned, nor is the fact that Ante Pavelic was part of the assassination of the Serbian king. He fled Croatia into exile and was returned to Croatia by Hitler to become the president of the Nazi First Independent State of Croatia in 1941. After the war he fled through the Vatican "Ratline" for Argentina where he became the "security advisor" to Juan Peron who issued 34,000 visas to Croatia war criminals to fled justice.

I suggest a little history lesson here.

The Congress of Berlin in 1878 was a meeting of the European Great Powers and the Ottoman Empire's leading statesmen in Berlin. German Chancellor Otto von Bismarck, who led the Congress, undertook to stabilize the Balkans. Serbia was internationally recognized by this Congress as a nation with the stipulation that Bosnia-Herzegovina would be under Austrian control for 33 years, much like NATO that currently occupies Kosovo. When it came time to give Bosnia-Herzegovina back to Serbian control Austria refused and the Archduke went to Sarajevo on Serbia's most sacred religious holiday (The commemoration of the Battle of Kosovo in 1389 in which Serbia lost 77,000 victims in one day and 40 years later lost their nation to Turkish enslavement for 500 years). It was WWI that not only destroyed the Austrian Empire but also the Ottoman Empire and in 1918 Serbia was again made free, but international politicians demanded that Serbia give up her statehood and share the nation as The Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes, a shotgun marriage from the outset. Serbs were forced to govern with her former enemies.

The Archduke came to Sarajevo that day to thumb his nose at the Serbs... and he deserved to be assassinated. World War I began over a month later, so Michael Dobbs is full of crap. At the Congress, Britain took over Cyprus and we now know how the Turks forcefully took over half of the island 25 years ago and just like the Albanian Muslims those Turk destroyed as many Greek Orthodox Churches as they could get their hands on. Those monasteries they did not destroy they converted to hotels.

The United Stated did not simply decided to build the single largest military base in the world since Vietnam called Camp Bondsteel in Kosovo. What is not being discussed by the partisan media is that the United States secretly agreed with Germany that by the year 2020 there would be no American military presence remaining in Germany. Therefore, Clinton and his ilk in the Pentagon knew that we were under pressure to create another European military presence and what a wonderful pretext... a war in the Balkans, one in which Clinton et al. secretly armed the Croats and Muslims, inflamed a war by Ambassador Zimmerman convincing Alija Izetbegovic to betray his signature on the Lisbon peace agreement before a single life was lost in the Balkans. The US wanted this war and they threw gassoline on the flames to make sure it was violent so we could build Bondsteel and have control of the oil coming from the Caspian Sea through Serbia down the Danube Rive into Europe. We built secret landing fields big enough for our biggest transport planes and we indeed delivered weapons to both the Croats and the Muslims.

A dozen retired American Generals with MPRI in Virginia went to Croatia where they secretly trained the Croats and were behind the plans that eventually became known as "Operation Storm" in which 250,000 Serbs were ethnically cleansed from Croatia, the single largest cleansing of these recent Balkan wars. I lost the last 5 relatives of my name during Operation Storm as they were too old and too sick to flee. I was notified by the Red Cross a month later they were discovered with their throats slashed. But Michael Dobbs and the partisan press does discuss such war crimes and that unholy miserable Holocaust institution he collaborates with is equally contemptible. It continues to pretend that only 6 million Jews died in the Holocaust. That institution gives lip service to the 20 million Russians put to death.

Well here is a new flash. More Serbs died per capita during the Holocaust than Jews who were collected from 7 different countries and taken to concentration camps to be liquidated. 1.4 million Serbs died in the Holocaust. Add to that figure the 51% adult male population that was killed during World War I this totals about 37% of Serbia's overall population exterminated in two World Wars.

Nice to see so many personal

Nice to see so many personal attacks and claims that Serb suffering somehow justifies anything.

Incidentally, Ferdinand's death did start World War I. That's not disputed by anyone. It was the immediate cause of the war. It wasn't the only cause, but if you want to go through every single thing that caused the war you'd have to fill a four hundred page (at least, preferably longer) book with details going back at least to the 17th century.

"Everybody" in reader Grant's historiography is him- or herself and an army of illiterates. Get thee to a library, Reader Grant. Take a taxi. It passed without causing undue public alarm. Conrad "suicided" Austria and started the Great War. Austria welcomed the assassination as a casus belli.

I agree with Grant

The killing of Archduke was the casus belli for world war 1. The timing of incidents and personalities matter in international relations. Ferdinand was the heir apparent to the that time world power Austria Hungary and his dead at the hands of Gavrilo did ignite the first world war. There were lot a parleys between the world powers and a lot of ultimatums were given.

For a death of Serbian king three years back, I think death of Libya's 'king' Gaddafi won't cause a world war. But the death of a major powerful king of Saudi Arabia by his enemies like how Gaddafi died would cause a major war in ME.

Attacks on an entire people

When an entire people are racistly attacked as the mainstream corporate-controlled media has done, Serbs and Serbian Americans have every right to fight back. They have been so viciously censored by our "free and fair" pseudo-intellectual media that anyone who can't even acknowledge another side of this story deserves to be fired let alone criticized.
The Austro-Hungarian empire illegally invaded and stole Bosnia Hercegovina after the Ottomans withdrew due to the courageous efforts of the Serbs to free the Balkans from their imperialism only to find another empire illegally occupy the vacuum. Austria and much of Europe were all itching for a fight. This was the perfect excuse - let's teach those "untermensch" Orthodox Christian Slavs a lesson! Well, it didn't quite work out that way in WWI and WWII and we'll see soon if and when WWIII comes that the current racist anti-Serbian Orthodox Christian efforts won't work out quite as planned either. One of my ancestors was a Priest in Hercegovina who would administer the last rites to Serbian Orthodox Christians just before were executed by the Austrians in the late 19th century/early 20th century when they rebelled against their barbaric anti-Orthodox Christian tyranny. There is alot more to this tragic story than many Westerners may know. And they certainly won't learn it from Michael Dobbs.

What a load of

What a load of smoke-screening nonsense in the comments above. The only person who makes even a half-hearted attempt to challenge Michael Dobbs's research is Stephan Karganovic, who thinks that in 2012 he can get away with citing reports from July 1995, when Mladic's arrangements for the decentralised slaughter of his prisoners were still being implemented and his administrators, among them Ljubisa Beara, were doing their best to ensure that the outside world didn't know what was going on.

What was going on here was a mass murder of captives - some prisoners of war and many civilians. Dobbs is simply reporting the evidence that has been heard on numerous occasions. I'd like to remind his detractors that the perpetrators' defence teams have had equally numerous opportunities to challenge that evidence - in 2012 we're no longer anywhere near the start of the judicial process. The arguments advanced by the defence teams of various defendants have simply failed to convince the overwhelming majority of the wider community of legal experts who have pondered the judgments handed down by the ICTY.

Operation Storm was not 'elsewhere'. it was the land where Turks, Austrians, Prussians, the Vatican and latterly Brits & Gringos & Saudis practiced "humanitarian intervention before and after 1990. Most Serbs in 1990 considered themselves "Yugoslavs". Most Croats didn't. The "poturici" -- Turkified Muslim Serbs -- "Bosniaks" -- didn't. Secular Muslims did, and they fought on the same side as the Serbs against the re-born Nazis of Greater and neo-Ottoman Bosnia. The "free press" smeared them as "renegade Muslims."
